Thailand Cops

Normally I don't wear a helmet when riding my scooter around the neighborhood but today, after riding the sidewalk down to Big C for some KFC, Karen didn't want to endure the broken sidewalk ride back home. So, we get on the main road for a smooth ride home and sure enough we were stopped by a police roadblock.

I made gestures like "my head is too big and I can't find a helmet big enough" while the cop is saying something in Thai. I pull out my wallet, which excites him as he doesn't want anyone to see that I have it open like I'm paying a bribe or something. There's only 100 bhat inside, about $3.00. He keeps marking on his ticket pad like he's writing a ticket and points to the 2,000 bhat ($66.00) figure he's written down. I can see there's a lot of marks on his pad where he's been scribbling for other "customers" like he's written a bunch of tickets.

Finally, I palm the 100 bhat and put my hand on the handlebar nearest him. He places his hand over mine while he points with his other hand to the police truck down the road and our "transaction" takes place smoothly.

Free and clear now, we take off down the road, all my other money safely hidden in another pocket!
