From a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner and her Psychiatrist spouse:
"Today's sign that healthcare is going to hell in a handbasket: I call our insurance company to talk to them about a rejected claim for XXX. They say they can't talk to me without her permission. I remind them she is 4. They say it doesn't matter. I say I am her legal guardian. Still doesn't matter. XXX has no clue what is going on and doesn't verbalize "permission". They say this is the last time they will talk to me without XXX's permission. ??!!"
Can you believe this? I can as I deal with these stupid insurance guys who are miles away telling me what I should give the patient that's sitting in front of me!
Here's more from the same mom:
"I am wondering why insurance companies get to dictate the healthcare industry. My husband (and all doctors) spent at least 10 years training to do his job yet the insurance company with a bunch of GED grads get to dictate the treatment a patient receives. Why aren't more people upset about this?! What is it going to take to change the system? Since when is a child's life not worth $40,000?"
"Today's reason to hate insurance companies: got a letter from our insurance appeals department stating that they are denying payment of IVIg infusions for XXX because he has a "life-threatening" condition and authorizing treatment for something that only "provides short-term relief would not be in his best interest." Yet, they also denied payment for the treatment that could cure his "life-threatening" illness!"
"Sometimes the powers that be actually pay attention. The Colorado state board of insurance is requiring that our insurance company rectify the situation with requiring a 4-year-old's permission to release medical information by September 7th and may be imposing fines!"
