Dear Governor Rick Perry

I'm a native Texan who is working as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner next door in New Mexico. Today I treated a lady who moved to the East Texas area a year ago and who has been off her medications for that length of time due to lack of mental health services. She returned to Carlsbad a couple weeks ago and today I started her back on her medications.

The reason I'm writing is that I'd be glad to be working in a rural Texas area if nurse practitioners were able to function independently like I'm doing in New Mexico. Like any provider I'd like to be able to consult with another provider, but not have my entire practice hinge on having to collaborate with another person. I know of Nurse Practitioners who have had to shut down their practices immediately due to their collaborating physician changing their mind, dying, or moving.

Until then, your patients will go without, and this Texan will stay in New Mexico.
